  2. 110th Anniversay Run/Walk   Welcome to the 110th Anniversary
    It
was a lovely eleven morning - for cricket. A bright day with just enough cloud cover to take the glare off the wicket and keep the West Indies on track for a magnificent Test win at Sabina Park.
Not too far away, the throng of us at Hanover Street did not have the eve of cricket glory on our minds. We were marking a good part of the private history of each of our lives. St. Hugh's girls are never, ever low on school spirit. With great hearts, broad smiles and cheers both loud and soft, we happily walked through quiet streets. Perhaps I alone missed the excitement of police outriders marshalling our colourful mas up Marescaux Road . Class of 68 - Amigas para siempre! About six were there The UWI group, well represented in admin and also academia Local and international civil servants, an essential ingredient in any functioning society Jasmine Campbell's hockey girls, still together though their lives are worlds apart, a past student from Canada, another from South Florida, a few St. Hugh's high/prep connections. The students carried banners of their clubs; Girl Guide Rangers; the Science and Technology Society, The Sixth Form Association and the Art Club. Pulling up the rear, the girls in uniform on the truck cheered as if they were dominating a road march leading into the National Stadium - nay the Bird's Nest. They are the true believers who will carry the name of the school forward.

Thanks to the 110th Anniversary Committee, the Principal and Vice Principals who have devoted their lives to education for making Saturday, February 7, 2009 memorable for them - and for us. Fidelitas lives.

  • Membership Mixer 2008:
    • Held on the 24th April at our dear St. Hugh’s High, this year’s Membership Mixer, organized by Janet Johnson-Haughton, was quite spectacular. The afternoon was overcast and later a little drizzle. As always, likkle drizzle could not have stopped all present from having fun, especially since the library lawns was nicely decorated with lights, balloons and accompanied by a delightful sound system. The evening opened with prayers by Sonia Martin, where it rolled on with a few words from the PSA President, Joy Gillett-Chambers and subsequently into the entertainment by students of our dear alma mater. The pieces performed by current students showcased the range of extra curricula activities that SHHS now offers. There was drumming, dub poetry and an interpretive dance piece.

    • As for the games, there was "the buck stops here" where we got to reminisce starting with the line "when I was at St. Hugh's..." Here ladies recounted from the hostel days, through to 90s with the crews like the 5 by 2 (graduates of early 90s), Steppaz (ladies in the late 90s), the Spice Girlz and the 2000s with girls remembering teachers who made special impact on their lives through knowledge sharing or sadly, through sheer misfortune on the teachers' part ;) As said by game-master, Lileith Nelson that game showed that the more things change the more they remain the same. The evening ended at about 10:30pm with persons hesitant to leave. As is customary, we sang the school song, hugged and left looking forward to the next event.

Overall, the Mixer had a very contemporary mix of past students ranging from the hostel ladies of the 60s to our ladies of the new millennium including representatives from our South Florida Chapter. It was refreshing seeing many year groups in support of this year's Mixer so kudos to the Membership Committee for having executed a delightful evening.
